Much has been written about antioxidants and their ability to lessen or delay Age-Related Macular Degeneration (AMD). AMD is a loss of sight in the central frame of vision that occurs late in life. It is caused by free radicals. These waste products form beneath the macula and accumulate over time, usually causing vision problems after age sixty.
An age-related eye disease study suggested that antioxidants like Vitamins A and E, zinc, selenium and carotenoids may remove the free radicals and neutralize the damage. Major nutraceutical manufacturers have made new supplements that mimic the natural antioxidants and match the formulas used in the study. More recent improvements to these supplements incorporate Lutein and Zeaxanthin and Meso-Zeaxanthin, all of which have been proven to be beneficial to sight. These supplements are available here.
